OpenAI acquires Ona: Building persistent agent cloud execution infrastructure for Codex

OpenAI announces acquisition of cloud execution environment company Ona. Ona’s technology enables Codex agents to run continuously for hours or even days in a secure cloud environment without requiring the user to maintain a terminal connection.

Codex currently has 5 million weekly active users, an increase of 400% from the beginning of the year. As Codex evolves from a programming aid to an autonomous agent platform, its most valuable work is extending from "minutes" to "hours or even days." Ona's technology solves a key bottleneck in this evolution path: the persistent execution environment.

The secure cloud execution environment provided by Ona enables Codex agents to: continuously run long-running tasks in the background, access enterprise-grade security policies and data isolation, and automatically notify users when execution is complete. OpenAI says the integration will allow Codex to evolve from an "auxiliary coding tool" to an "autonomous work platform."
